Lynx L42TR Grill Review

Lynx 42" Grill with Trident Grill Review

Lynx Professional Grills was founded in 2000 by Dale Seiden. This industry veteran brought another veteran engineer to bring one of the markets first luxurious commercial quality gas grill for residential use.

With Dale's eye for style assisted by Dante's award winning engineering expertise, they introduced a truly innovative product in its time. The Lynx brand was later sold and he branched out on their own to create Alfresco (Seiden).

Lynx started with 3 models : 27, 36, 48 (which are all discontinued model sizes).

The current lineup features a 30, 36, 42 and 54.

Lynx L42TR Built-in Grill with Trident Burner

This review will be on the 42". The Lynx 42" Grill with Trident Prosear is a three burner grill with Rotisserie. In this model, Two of the burners are Cast Ceramic and one is a Trident (Prosear). It has and still is manufactured in the USA. It can also come with three cast ceramic burners. You will have to be sure which model you prefer. You cannot change the Trident burner for a ceramic burner. Both units are available to be built-in to an outdoor kitchen or on a freestanding cart.

Cast Ceramic Burners

Lynx Cast Ceramic Burner

The Burners in the Lynx Grills (2018 and forward) are made from an exclusive Cordiarite Cast Ceramic. There is no gas port hole cleaning required. The ports on this burner are hidden from drippings so that they never clog.

The heat from the burner self cleans whenever burner is on by vaporizing drippings.

This cast ceramic burner burns hotter and more consistent than any metal burner. The ceramic distributes intense and even heat before it even reaches the briquettes. This means more even and consistent heat across the cooking surface.

The main burners in original Lynx Grills were Cast Brass vs a Stainless U shaped. The Brass Burner is the grills claim to fame as it was the first grill to use such a burner. it is very heavy (as with any cast burners) They produce 25,000 BTUs per burner. They do require maintenance as any cast burner will flake over time. We do not feel it adds any better heat value over a stainless burner. If you have a older Lynx with the Brass Burners, you can change for the new Cast Ceramic.

Trident Prosear Burner

Lynx has been manufacturing the 42" model since 2002. The two major changes that have evolved in this grill is the Trident Burner and the ignition. The prosear burner is no longer the rectangular shape as seen in most grills with an infrared burner. The temperature control in their prosear burner has a fairly large range of 300-1000 degrees which allows you to grill more delicate foods.

The Trident Prosear burner, in this grill, is unlike any on the market. We love it because you can turn down the heat to low temperatures (300 degrees) where most on the market only deliver the high high intense heat. The only disadvantage, is.... if you hate it or you simply just need the entire grill to be convection, you cannot swap it for a brass burner. The only grill in this luxury market that has the ability to swap is Twin Eagles and this is a great feature to have. As if your having a large party and want all 3 burners to be blue flame you can easily change out the burner and replace the sear burner when you need it.

Hot Surface Ignition

The ignition started as a battery operated system and has evolved into an electronically operated hot surface ignition system. This is the most reliable ignition system on the market. The grill is ignited simply by pressing in the knobs and turning burner on. There is no ignition switch. It is powered by a microswitch that attached to the valve. When the knob is depressed, it hits the micro-switch that creates the spark to the glowing hot surface electrode. The microswitch is a super easy part to replace (if it should go bad)

Cooking Grates

The cooking grates are a heavy duty stainless rod. Same as what is used in the Alfresco Grills. We like the idea of hexagonal shape that Twin Eagles and Fire Magic uses as it provides more food contact on the grate. But, these grates are super heavy duty!

Briquette Trays for Even Heat Distribution

Lynx Briquette Tray with Clips

The grill has consistently used a ceramic briquette tray heat distribution system since its inception in the market. The briquettes have a hollow bottom that allows them to heat and radiate faster. They use clips to hold them in place. This is one of the features of this tray we dislike the most. The clips are a pain to replace and if you have to replace a lot of them, you will be there awhile.

We like the lock bar system better that Twin Eagles and Alfresco uses. Much faster to change briquettes and the lock bar does not disintegrate as quickly as the clips. The purpose of t having the briquettes "locked" in place is too keep them from moving as well as having the ability to turn the tray upside down to burn off baked on grease.

The ceramic briquette heat distribution system is the best system on the market.

Lynx L42 LED Blue Lights

The control panel illuminates blue, which in my opinion, is much prettier than Alfresco's Amber Colored Lights. Twin Eagles also uses the blue lights.

The grill comes with a smoker box for smoking wood or herbs. We like that Alfresco has a dedicated low BTU smoker burner to heat the smoking tray independent of utilizing the main burners. Gives you more flexibility.

The model and serial number are located in two places on this grill : under the drip (grease) tray and behind the control panel. This grill has the easiest control panel to remove (we love that). Simply pull the tabs on the left and right and lift the control panel face off.

Behind the control panel is another story. Replacing any electrical components is a daunting task on this grill especially compared to the clean design of Alfresco or Twin Eagles.

The most obsolete feature on the grill is the external rotisserie motor. Their competitors have both encased the rotisserie motor in the firebox (Alfresco first, followed by Twin Eagles)

We repair more Lynx grills than we do Alfresco or Twin Eagles as they have been in the marketplace for many many more years.
