Tech Tip: When should I replace my sear burner?
- Loud “whooshing” at ignition/operation (often a sign of a cracked ceramic or failed internal baffle)
- Visible cracks, warping, or physical damage to the burner housing
- Uneven infrared heat that remains after proper cleaning
Before you replace it: delayed ignition or weak lighting can be caused by soot/grease in the ports. Carefully clean/vacuum the burner area and verify gas supply before assuming the burner is bad.
BBQ Depot Tech Advice: Clean Before You Replace
Before replacing your 290-0052 burner, try this first. Many infrared burners get replaced when they simply need proper cleaning.
1. Use the Burn-Off Method
After cooking, turn the Sear Zone to High for 5–10 minutes with the hood open. The radiant heat will carbonize grease into fine ash. This is how the burner is designed to self-clean.
2. Lightly Vacuum — No Scrubbing
Once completely cool, lightly vacuum loose ash from the ceramic surface.
Do not scrub. Do not use a brush attachment.
Brushes can push debris into other ports and pressure can crack the ceramic tiles.
No Water
Never use water, degreasers, or liquid cleaners on an infrared burner. Ceramic absorbs moisture. If lit while damp, expanding steam will crack it internally. If it ever gets wet, allow 24–48 hours of complete air drying before lighting.
Replace the burner if you see:
- Large cracks in the ceramic tiles
- Internal rattling (broken internal baffle)
