Grill Grates

Replacement grill grates restore cooking performance and help extend the life of your grill. Whether your existing grates are rusted, chipped, warped, or simply worn out, replacing them can improve heat distribution, create better sear marks, and make cleanup easier.

At The BBQ Depot, we carry replacement cooking grates for hundreds of gas grill models from brands including Weber, Lynx, Alfresco, Twin Eagles, Fire Magic, DCS, Viking, and many others. If you're unsure which grate fits your grill, our experts can help verify compatibility before you order.

Signs It's Time to Replace Your Grill Grates

You should consider replacing your cooking grates if you notice any of the following:

  • Heavy rust that cannot be removed with cleaning
  • Porcelain coating that is chipped or flaking
  • Broken or separated rods
  • Severe grease buildup that no longer cleans effectively
  • Warping that causes uneven cooking or poor fitment

While routine maintenance can extend the life of your grates, all cooking surfaces eventually wear out from repeated exposure to heat, moisture, grease, and outdoor conditions.

Choosing the Right Grill Grate Material

Stainless Steel Grill Grates

Stainless steel grates are the most popular replacement option because they offer an excellent balance of durability, corrosion resistance, and low maintenance. They are easy to clean and perform well in most grilling environments.

Porcelain-Coated Grill Grates

Porcelain-coated grates feature a steel core protected by a baked enamel finish. They provide a smooth cooking surface and are easy to clean, but the coating can chip if struck with metal tools or dropped. Once the coating is damaged, the exposed steel can rust.

Cast Iron Grill Grates

Cast iron grates retain heat exceptionally well and create outstanding sear marks. They are favored by grill enthusiasts who want maximum heat retention, but they require regular seasoning and maintenance to prevent rust.

Can You Upgrade to a Different Type of Grill Grate?

Yes. As long as the replacement grate matches the dimensions and support ledges inside your grill, you can often switch materials. Many customers replace worn porcelain-coated grates with stainless steel for easier maintenance, while others prefer cast iron for improved searing performance.

How to Measure Replacement Grill Grates

Accurate measurements are critical when selecting replacement cooking grates.

  1. Measure the depth (front to back) of each grate.
  2. Measure the width (left to right).
  3. Count the total number of grate sections in the grill.
  4. Note any unique features such as notches, cutouts, tabs, or curved edges.

The front-to-back measurement is usually the most important because it determines whether the grate will properly sit on the grill's support ledges.

BBQ Depot Expert Tip

Many grill manufacturers changed grate designs during production runs, even within the same model family. The model number alone is not always enough to identify the correct replacement grate. We recommend measuring your existing grate and comparing dimensions before ordering. If you need assistance, send us your grill model number and a photo of the original grate and we'll help verify compatibility.
