Grill heat shields are known by many names depending on the manufacturer, including heat plates, flame tamers, flavorizer bars, briquette trays, heat tents, burner covers, and heat angles. Regardless of the name, they all serve the same primary purpose—protecting the burners while spreading the individual burner flames into an even cooking pattern across the cooking surface.
Heat shields sit directly above your grill burners to help eliminate hot spots, reduce flare-ups, vaporize food drippings for added barbecue flavor, and extend burner life by protecting them from grease and debris.
Because they are constantly exposed to intense burner heat from below and grease and food drippings from above, they are among the most frequently replaced parts on a gas grill.

The easiest way to identify the correct replacement is by your grill brand and model number. This information is usually found on the rating plate or inside your owner's manual.
If the model number is unavailable, remove one of your existing heat shields and compare its length, width, shape, mounting style, and material with the replacement. Proper fit is important because the heat shield must fully protect the burner while allowing proper airflow and even heat distribution.
Replacement heat shields are commonly made from stainless steel or porcelain-coated steel. Stainless steel generally provides the longest service life because it will not rust if the surface becomes scratched or worn. Porcelain-coated steel performs well but may eventually chip, exposing the steel underneath to corrosion.
