A technique referred to as seasoning will extend the life of cast iron cooking grids.  Seasoning cast iron must be done prior to using them for grilling.  This process seals the cast iron which forms a protective barrier that prevents food from sticking to while being cooked.  There’s nothing more irritating than being so close to a delicious meal only to lose half of it because of the cooking grids on your grill.
